# Stemmy > Stemmy is a free Chrome extension for people who read English online: it shows what a word means in the sentence they are reading, saves it with that sentence, and reviews it with spaced repetition. Facts below checked 23 October 2026 against extension version 1.4.0. ## Facts - Stemmy is a free Chrome extension (https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/stemmy-vocabulary-wallet/mcajkojclojhelolpcggbgmdkccedbmh) that shows what an English word means in the sentence you are reading, saves it to a Vocabulary Wallet with that sentence, and brings it back in short spaced-repetition reviews. - Look up a word: select it and click the Stemmy button beside it, press Alt+Shift+D, or click the toolbar icon. The card leads with the meaning for that sentence; "More about this word" adds synonyms and WordDNA (roots and related words). - Vocabulary Wallet: each saved word keeps its meaning, the source sentence and the page link; words are grouped into categories automatically; search and JSON export are built in. - Reviews: FSRS spaced repetition. Each rating button shows when the word comes back; at most 20 new words are introduced per day. The toolbar icon shows how many words are due. - Wallet Letters (optional): up to three due words by email, daily, every other day or weekly, with "I remembered" / "I forgot" links that update the schedule. - Also: AI stories from saved words; X-Ray (right-click "Find hard words on this page"); optional Immersion button that places saved words into the page you are reading. - Free to install. No paid plan is offered today. AI features need a free account (Google Sign-In or email). Each account gets 150 free AI uses in total, once; Ghost Card lookups and cloud voice draw on them. Once the included uses are spent, your wallet, reviews, the toolbar badge and export keep working, and looking up a word you already saved stays free; new AI meanings wait for a future allowance. Questions: hello@stemmy.app. - Privacy: the wallet, reviews and settings are stored in the browser. For a meaning, the word and the sentence around it go to the AI provider; X-Ray and Immersion send page text only when started. Stemmy does not keep a list of pages visited and does not sell personal data. Policy: https://stemmy.app/privacy/ - Language: English meanings only; Stemmy does not translate. Platform: Google Chrome on desktop.
